Once we are on site, a single-storey extension usually runs roughly like this, allowing for size, weather and ground: Weeks 1 to 2: setting up, then groundworks and foundations, the part the local clay and any nearby trees affect most. Weeks 3 to 4: brickwork up to damp-proof course, drainage and the slab. Weeks 4 to 6: walls up, structural steel in for the open-plan spans, roof on and made watertight.
